Luke, Mills & Jackson

Luke, Mills and Jackson - quality, mainly acoustic music

Luke, Mills & Jackson are a versatile trio based in Mid-Wales. Dave Luke and Tommy Mills first teamed up in 1998 to form a duo playing a variety of roots music, but focusing in particular on country music. Drawing their repertoire from the likes of Ricky Skaggs, Steve Earle, Dwight Yoakam and Lyle Lovett, but also acknowledging the influence of older all-time greats (Hank Williams, Buck Owens, Bill Monroe etc.), they have steadily built up a reputation for quality, mainly acoustic music with strictly no use of drum machines or backing tracks.

Audio Tracks

Always to the fore are Dave and Tommy’s soaring and distinctive vocal harmonies backed up by skilled, tasteful playing.

A couple of years ago they were joined by George Jackson: George’s subtle and sympathetic drumming has added a new dimension to the sound, without moving it away from its semi-acoustic base.

The band is equally at home in rowdy bars or plush theatres; outdoor festivals or intimate Arts Centres- and they adapt their huge repertoire to suit the audience.

DAVE LUKE

DAVE LUKE

(guitar/mandolin/vocals)

Dave played in acclaimed (and award-winning) bands Tender Mercies and The Coyotes in London in the early to mid-90s, before relocating to Powys and forming a partnership with Tommy, who invited him to join bands playing a variety of music including pop(The Lisa Stephens Band), jazz (Swing Thing) and zydeco (Z-Funk). In 1999 Dave became a regular member of Nashville-based singer-songwriter Gail Davies’ band on her tours of the UK and Europe and he has made two trips to Nashville to play at legendary venues The Grand Ole Opry and The Ryman Auditorium as a part of Gail’s band.

TOMMY MILLS

TOMMY MILLS

(bass guitar/acoustic guitar/vocals)

Tommy has played an extraordinary variety of music in his career. From pop bands signed to major record labels to touring as a member of Alvin Stardust’s band; from television appearances as a member of The Boat Band to being a regular fixture on the Cajun and Zydeco circuit (Joe Le Taxi, Zydeco Active). In the late 80s, Tommy was a popular member of Ida Red, one of the great Country Music Club and Festival acts. More recently, as well as the aforementioned partnership with Dave Luke, he has been playing double bass with world music act Radio Chango and has toured with visiting Louisiana acts Sean Vidrine, Balfa Toujours and Harold Guillory.

GEORGE JACKSON

GEORGE JACKSON

(drums/vocals)

George has had a long and varied career in jazz and show bands, and as a session musician, playing and recording in a huge variety of styles. For years, he was a member of the legendary Roy Harper’s band and toured Europe extensively. In recent times, he has quickly built up a reputation for himself in Mid-Wales and has undertaken tours with Joe Le Taxi and (alongside Dave Luke) the Gail Davies band. He also regularly plays and tours with rock and soul act The Whisky Bandits.
